When Was Cannabis Legalized in Virginia?
Medical cannabis was legalized in Virginia in 2020 with the passage of Senate Bill 1015 and House Bill 1460. Recreational cannabis was legalized on July 1, 2021, through House Bill 2312 and Senate Bill 1406, making Virginia the first Southern state to legalize recreational cannabis.

- Grow up to four plants per household (not per person)
- Share (not sell) up to one ounce with other adults
However, retail sales of recreational cannabis are not yet legal. The original legislation planned for retail sales to begin in 2024, but this timeline has been subject to ongoing legislative debate.

- Recreational users: Up to 1 ounce (28.3 grams)

Growing Laws
Virginia residents aged 21 and older can legally grow up to four marijuana plants per household for personal use. Important requirements include:

How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Virginia
Check if you qualify
